Warrantless wiretaps...

I'm probably the last person on the intardnets to see this, but I'll post it anyway.  Everyone of you have probably already seen it.  Anyway...  Tell me what you think.

The House on Wednesday reauthorized for five years broad electronic eavesdropping powers that legalized and expanded the George W. Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping program.
The FISA Amendments Act, (.pdf) which is expiring at year’s end, allows the government to electronically eavesdrop on Americans’ phone calls and e-mails without a probable-cause warrant so long as one of the parties to the communication is believed outside the United States. The communications may be intercepted “to acquire foreign intelligence information.”
The government has also interpreted the law to mean that as long as the real target is al-Qaida, the government can wiretap purely domestic e-mails and phone calls without getting a warrant from a judge. That’s according to David Kris, a former top anti-terrorism attorney at the Justice Department.

  2. Apparently all you have to do is mention Al Qaeda and you will get listened to by the guys with all the fancy electronic gear that you and I bought for them. Like Al Qaeda is our biggest problem. How many Al Qaeda sympathizers do you think there are in America? 3? 4? Al Qaeda is so yesterday. Do you suppose there are sleeper cells of Al Qaeda hiding out in the US? Perhaps they are laying low, fearful that they might get caught by DHS or TSA?

Our weekly Threat Briefings when I was stationed in Germany (a hundred years ago) identified them as "Arab Terrorists". Probably not too PC by today's standards, eh? So, yeah, we had "Arab Terrorists" and the "Russian Menace" to worry about. And the German terrorists like Baader-Meinhof and Red Army Faction. And the PLO and Black September. Yeah, there were terrorists then and there are terrorists now. Nothing much has changed other than the seeming desire of OUR government to stifle OUR freedoms.

    Oh well... Whatcha gonna do?
