Not that different, really. At the time of the Japanese internment we had a sociopathic Socialist President with visions of being King, just like we do today.
FDR was willing to crush those who didn't agree with him by using extra-constitutional means, too.
And the people loved him. And the people glorified and worshiped him. And he was evil. Just like the current resident of the White House.
don't like what happens in war..., dont fucking start one."
If you look at the things going on is this country today with an open mind its fairly easy to get the impression that the current administration is attempting to start a war with the people of America, or between the people of America. It doesn't matter which. Either one would achieve the desired end result.
Blue.. Yes it was a different time. We were at war. A declared war. the constitution grants broad powers to the POTUS during war. My dad was a young man at the time of WW2. He remembers having air raid drills & lights out at night. He lived on the CA coast. There was a great concern of the Japs sending out guidance info to jap subs, ships, spies etc. Thats the way it went down then and I believe the president did the right thing.
I think that, in the end, the fears of Japanese spies within our population turned out to be unfounded paranoia. We issued the appropriate apologies and reparations because we knew their internment was never justified.
Just a little later in the war we had German submarines operating just off our east coast, sinking ships and disrupting shipping and disrupting the war effort. We never imprisoned German-American citizens, we never even seriously considered it. The paranoia against the possibility of German spies never reached the same crescendo as the paranoia against the Japanese.
Craig... Do you need First Aid, or is it merely a grazing flesh wound?

You're close to the right answer there, but not quite. Develop that thought just a little bit more. I'm betting that you can get it!
The wars against the Germans and the Japanese both ended for the same reason... We decimated their countries and their armies and demoralized their citizens and put both in a position of being unable to carry on fighting.
Neither side just quit. Both sides were "forced" to surrender or face having their countries being removed from the map.
...and before that were the Indian rezs...

I wonder why that was?
Again, I thank you for your comment.

Just barely a flesh wound :)
ReplyDeleteIt has always been 'different times."
ReplyDeleteAs to the reasons for the WWII Japan/US, it's much more complicated than even old history books tell us, not to mention asinine WeirdHolly movies.
Strange a country of all oil and see what happens. Why did we go to Kuwait? Why we even care about the ME? Please don't utter israel.
I've no doubt the camps will be in our future, should we be too unlucky in our evasion and escape.
You all stay safe,
