  1. "To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association (NRA), the powerful gun lobby."

"They include rallying support from Wal-Mart Stores Inc and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses."

"The White House has been in contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a gun control advocate who could emerge as a surrogate for the administration's agenda."

"The Post cited several people involved in the administration's talks on gun control for its story. They included Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum."

Now, tell me, gentle readers, do any of the items sound like a "national dialogue", or "national conversation" to you? A dialogue is "a discussion between representatives of parties to a conflict that is aimed at resolution". A conversation is "an informal discussion of an issue by representatives of governments, institutions, or groups."

It sounds more like a gun control summit, to me.

  2. "The gun has been called the great equalizer, meaning that a small person with a gun is equal to a large person, but it is a great equalizer in another way, too. It insures that the people are the equal of their government whenever that government forgets that it is servant and not master of the governed. When the British forgot that they got a revolution. And, as a result, we Americans got a Constitution; a Constitution that, as those who wrote it were determined, would keep men free. If we give up part of that Constitution we give up part of our freedom and increase the chance that we will lose it all." --Ronald Reagan

  4. "Today, when a concerted effort is made to obliterate this point, it cannot be repeated too often that the Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals—that it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government—that it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen’s protection against the government."

  5. "There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. When there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."
