al Qaeda...

Correct me if I'm wrong...

We are at war with al Qaeda in Afghanistan and other places around the world.  They are our sworn enemy, right?  They masterminded the 9-11 attacks, right?  Didn't they murder over 3000 American citizens that day?  We have sworn to search them out, wherever they may be, and bring them to justice for their despicable acts...

Yet...

We are supporting the rebels in Syria in their fight against the Assad government.  We have provided them with weapons and money as well as with moral support.  Possibly other types of support as well.  The Syrian rebels that we are supporting are made up of al Qaeda and other unsavory types, right?  There is a high probability, in fact, that the CIA station in Benghazi, Libya was a front for clandestine operations by the US government to supply arms from the Saudis and arms collected from Egypt after Qadaffi was overthrown, as well as from other countries in the Middle East to the al Qaeda and other Syrian rebels, right?

Well...

Article III, Section 3 of the US Constitution states:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

So...

"...or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

If al Qaeda is our sworn enemy, that means all al Qaeda, right?  Not just the al Qaeda in Afghanistan or Iraq or al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula, right?  All al Qaeda, everywhere.  Including the al Qaeda that we are giving aid and comfort to in their war against the Syrian government.  Or are those al Qaeda somehow different?  Do they have a pass that makes them somehow not our sworn enemy?

Or...

Are we suspending Article III, Section 3 of the constitution so that, somehow, giving aid and comfort to our enemy is not a treasonable offense?

I wonder if any of the arms and munitions we are supplying to the rebels in Syria are making their way to Afghanistan for al Qaeda there to use against American troops?  Or to arm al Qaeda in Iraq so they can kill Iraqi citizens who helped Americans during the Iraq war?  I'm sure that we account very precisely for those weapons so that nothing like that could ever happen.  I mean, if we give al Qaeda in Syria weapons to fight the Assad regime, we make them promise that they won't use them for anything else, right?

Anyway, I was just wondering.  Perhaps someone can help me answer these questions and quench my curiosity?

Thanks in advance...

  1. I believe this gives much credence to the recent reports that Obama is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, not that we didn't think so before.

  2. All of these goings on are as confusing as what went on in Ireland in the 70s. I don't even know who's who anymore?
