I taught both my girls to use a .22 single-shot bolt action when they were about 9 and 10. They used to watch me shoot skeet, but weren't much interested in doin it themselves.

We taught my youngest grandson (7 years old) to shoot the AR-15 a coupla weeks ago. Fire a couple rounds thru my .22 revolver, too. Decided not to let him go with his mother's .38, though, and definitely not his father's .44 magnum. Little too much recoil for his frame.
In fact, they can't be prosecuted for having an unregistered firearm, since: To register, they would have to admit they had a firearm; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is itself a felony; the 5th amendment protects them against self-incrimination. So only the law-abiding can be forced to register their guns. Swell...
They do register to vote for the party who wants gun control.
