30 APR 75...

The fall of Saigon...

~~~~~~~
I remember this well...  I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas on this day in 1975, having recently PCS'd from Germany...
Thanks for the nudge, David P.  ;)
  1. I was at 29 Palms. I shipped out shortly after to go work with the refugee relocation. Fun times.
  2. Most of my unit from Hood went to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas to help with the relocation...
  3. Quite the headline and photo of the helicopter on the roof. It seemed impossible. But, there it was. Jane Fonda and John (I served in Vietnam) Kerry were dancing in the friggin streets back home. I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford, UK at the time. I had just left Udorn RTAFB Thailand 5 months earlier. I can still smell the klongs aka Binjo ditches. Remember the F#$K You lizards and the RRREE-Upp Frogs? Hot girls and cold beer on every street corner. Good times, eh? Things were a lot different then, not like today.
  4. I remember thinking that we had just up and abandoned our friends, the South Vietnamese. And the 58 thousand...
    We have never been the same.
  5. I was also at Fort Hood, Texas when this happened, and I had spent two straight years in the old Republic of Viet Nam.
    I used to attend church services in downtown Saigon.
    Later, I joined a group of veterans seeking to assist church members left behind and whose family members were separated by the war.
  10. I was an 8 year old kid watching this unfold on the news, hoping to get a glimpse of my two oldest brothers who were there.
  11. MADDOG... Agree. People like Kerry become politicians and Hanoi Jane becomes a cultural icon. Anyone paying attention could have predicted the outcome...
    Chris... Weird how that works, eh? Did they both make it home?
