Most of the greats I listened to as a teen are gone now. I think Willie is the only guy left, with Dollie Parton and Emmylou Harris still hanging on to represent the ladies. God; that was good country! I knew it even back then, as that odd kid on my block who listened to country. Used to be, every artist had a signature sound. I listen to the radio now, and every artist and song sounds like every other artist and song. It’s like a disco mix; generic white noise, interspersed with commercials. Seems like looks trump talent now. I know I’m sounding old here, but that music back then REALLY WAS better. It started to crap out in the eighties, when everything became bubblegum “crossover” material. Damn; even music is homosexual now!
The sad thing; driving home from work, listening to what passes for C&W these days, there was NOT ONE MENTION of Merle's passing; not one of his songs played in tribute. I guess, if it's not "top 40," it never existed. I'm here to testify; it did, and it was GOOD!
Definately one of the good ole boys! RIP!

RIP, Merle!
Willie, Kris Kristofferson, Charlie Daniels... Not many left. Certainly miss Waylon. Will definately miss Mr. Haggard.
ReplyDeleteAnother voice of the People and our culture gone. He will be sorely missed.
