Oh for crying out loud. The Confederate States of America were formed solely and completely to protect and advance the practice of Chattel Slavery. I quote John Singleton Mosby, not generally considered a lackey of the north, "The war was a quarrel, and if the quarrel wasn't about slavery what was it about?" If you want to say that you had kin that died fighting for what they believed in and you're proud of them, drive on. If you want to say the Battle Ensign,as opposed to the CSAs national colors which not one person in a hundred would recognize today, stands for courage and steadfastness and the martial virtues in general, fine. But please don't piss on my leg and tell me its raining and don't tell me the Civil War was fought over the tariff rates in Savannah harbor. Please. And, since I know its going to come up, I am a US Army Airborne Ranger who went on to fight in Rhodesia, and Southwest Africa, and El Salvador, and Nicaragua against totalitarian socialism.
Actually that's the Naval Jack. The battle standard is square. Question: why would 66% of the male population fight and die for an institution only 7% of the population had any part in. The slavery narrative does fit the Yankee version of history but that don't make it right.
If I could prevent this war by giving up my slaves, I would. Paraphrased from Robt. Lee
