of David Maraniss’s new book, we now know that yet another key prop of Barack
Obama’s identity is false: His Kenyan grandfather was not brutally tortured or
even non-brutally detained by his British colonial masters. The composite
gram’pa joins an ever-swelling cast of characters from Barack’s “memoir” who, to
put it discreetly, differ somewhat in reality from their bit parts in the grand
Obama narrative. The best friend at school portrayed in Obama’s autobiography as
“a symbol of young blackness” was, in fact, half Japanese, and not a close
friend. The white girlfriend he took to an off-Broadway play that prompted an
angry post-show exchange about race never saw the play, dated Obama in an
entirely different time zone, and had no such world-historically significant
conversation with him. His Indonesian step-grandfather supposedly killed by
Dutch soldiers during his people’s valiant struggle against colonialism met his
actual demise when he “fell off a chair at his home while trying to hang
drapes.”
David Maraniss is no right-winger, and can’t understand why boorish
non-literary types have seized on his book as evidence that the president
of the United
States is a
Grade A phony. “It is a legitimate question about where the line is in memoir,”
he told Soledad O’Brien on CNN. My Oxford dictionary defines “memoir” as “an
historical account or biography written from personal knowledge.” And if Obama
doesn’t have “personal knowledge” of his tortured grandfather, war-hero
step-grandfather, and racially obsessed theater-buff girlfriend, who does? But
in recent years, the Left has turned the fake memoir into one of the most
prestigious literary genres: Oprah’s Book Club recommended James Frey’s A Million
Little
Pieces,
hailed by Bret Easton Ellis as a “heartbreaking memoir” of “poetic honesty,” but
subsequently revealed to be heavy on the “poetic” and rather light on the
“honesty.” The “heartbreaking memoir” of a drug-addled street punk who got
tossed in the slammer after brawling with cops while high on crack with his
narco-hooker girlfriend proved to be the work of some suburban Pat Boone type
with a couple of parking tickets. (I exaggerate, but not as much as he
did.)
Oprah was also smitten by The Education of Little Tree, the
heartwarmingly honest memoir of a Cherokee childhood which turned out to be
concocted by a former Klansman whose only previous notable literary work was
George Wallace’s “Segregation Forever” speech. Fragments: Memories of a
Wartime Childhood is a heartbreakingly honest, poetically searing,
searingly painful, painfully honest, etc. account of Binjamin Wilkomirski’s
unimaginably horrific boyhood in the Jewish ghetto of Riga and the Nazi
concentration camp at Auschwitz. After his memoir won America’s respected
National Jewish Book Award, Mr. Wilkomirski was inevitably discovered to have
been born in Switzerland and spent the war in a prosperous neighborhood of
Zurich being raised by a nice middle-class couple. He certainly had a deprived
childhood, at least from the point of view of a literary agent pitching a memoir
to a major publisher. But the “unimaginable” horror of his book turned out to be
all too easily imagined. Fake memoirs have won the Nobel Peace Prize and are
taught at Ivy League schools to the scions of middle-class families who take on
six figure debts for the privilege (I, Rigoberta Menchú). They’re
handed out by the Pentagon to senior officers embarking on a tour of Afghanistan
(Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea) on the entirely reasonable grounds
that a complete fantasy could hardly be less credible than current NATO
strategy.
In such a world, it was surely only a matter of time before a fake
memoirist got elected as president of
the United States. Indeed, the aforementioned Rigoberta Menchú ran as a
candidate in the 2007 and 2011 presidential elections in Guatemala, although she
got knocked out in the first round — Guatemalans evidently being disinclined to
elect someone to the highest office in the land with no accomplishment
whatsoever apart from a lousy fake memoir. Which just goes to show what a bunch
of unsophisticated rubes they are.
In an inspired line of argument, Ben Smith of the website BuzzFeed suggests
that the controversy over Dreams
from My Father
is the fault of conservatives who have “taken the self-portrait at face value.”
We are so unlettered and hicky that we think a memoir is about stuff that
actually happened rather than a literary jeu d’esprit playing with
nuances of notions of assumptions of preconceptions of concoctions of invented
baloney. And so we regard the first member of the Invented-American community to
make it to the White House as a kinda weird development rather than an
encouraging sign of how a new post-racial, post-gender, post-modern America is
moving beyond the old straightjackets of black and white, male and female, gay
and straight, real and hallucinatory.
The question now is whether the United States itself is merely the latest
chapter of Obama’s fake memoir. You’ll notice that, in the examples listed
above, the invention only goes one way. No Cherokee orphan, Holocaust survivor,
or recovering drug addict pretends to be George Wallace’s speechwriter. Instead,
the beneficiaries of boring middle-class Western life seek to appropriate the
narratives and thereby enjoy the electric frisson of fashionable victim groups.
And so it goes with public policy in the West at twilight.
Thus, Obama’s executive order on immigration exempting a million people
from the laws of the United States is patently unconstitutional, but that’s not
how an NPR listener looks at it: To him, Obama’s unilateral amnesty enriches
stultifying white-bread America with a million plucky little Rigoberta Menchús
and their heartbreaking stories. Eric Holder’s entire tenure as attorney general
is a fake memoir all by itself, and his invocation of “executive privilege” in
the Fast and Furious scandal is preposterous, but American liberals can’t hear:
Insofar as they know anything about Fast and Furious, it’s something to do with
the government
tracking the guns of fellows like those Alabama “Segregation Forever” nuts,
rather than a means by which hundreds of innocent Rigoberta Menchús south of the
border were gunned down with weapons sold to their killers by liberal
policymakers of the Obama administration. If that’s the alternative narrative,
they’ll take the fake memoir.
Similarly, Obamacare is
apparently all about the repressed patriarchal white male waging his “war on
women.” The women are struggling 30-year-old Georgetown Law coeds whose starting
salary after graduation is 140 grand a year, but let’s not get hung up on
details. Dodd-Frank financial reform, also awaiting Supreme Court judgment, is
another unconstitutional power grab, but its designated villains are
mustache-twirling top-hatted bankers, so likewise who cares?
One can understand why the beneficiaries of the postwar West’s expansion of
middle-class prosperity would rather pass themselves off as members of way
cooler victim groups: It’s a great career move. It may even have potential
beyond the page: See Sandra Fluke’s dazzling pre-Broadway tryout of Fake
Memoir: The High School Musical, in which a 30-year-old Georgetown Law coed
whose starting salary after graduation is 140 grand a year passes herself off as
the Little Rigoberta Hussein Wilkomirski of the Rite-Aid pick-up line. But
transforming an entire nation into a fake memoir is unlikely to prove half so
lucrative. The heartwarming immigrants, the contraceptive-less coeds, the
mustache-twirling bankers all provide cover for a far less appealing narrative:
an expansion of centralized power hitherto unknown to this republic. In reality,
Obama’s step-grandfather died falling off the chair while changing the drapes.
In the fake-memoir version, Big Government’s on the chair, and it’s curtains for
America.

XDs...
Went to see my gun guy today just to look around. I had asked him to give me a call if he gets a used GP100 with a 4" barrel. He hadn't called, but he had 2 used ones with 6" barrels. I like the gun, but the 6" is more than I want. I asked him to keep looking.
I asked if he had anything else that was neat. He showed me a Winchester model 70 in 300 Remington Ultra Mag. I said "No thanks". A little too much for rabbits, if you ask me.
He then showed me the new Springfield XDs. .45ACP, 5+1, slim and light. I carry an XD40 Sub Compact, which is a fairly small "full sized" pistol. The XDs is slightly smaller. It's thinner. It's sweet. He said that they received 3 of them on Friday. Their first shipment. They sold one of them Friday night and one yesterday. I walked away and met the wife out in the mall, ready to head home. She asked me if I had found anything. I told her that Blake had a new XDs that's pretty nice. "Oh? You didn't buy it?"
I said "no, I didn't have my glasses with me so I wouldn't be able to see to fill out the paperwork". She told me that my glasses were in the car. (She was looking at me like I was a dumbass. You'd have to know her to completely understand. :)
I took that to mean that she thought I should purchase this pistol.
So, they sold their last one today.
It weighs a whopping 19 ounces empty and will fit in the pocket of my baggy shorts. It really isn't a whole lot smaller than my Sub Compact, but it's slimmer. 1" wide, total. If you didn't include the slide release or the take-down lever in that width, it's 7/8 inch wide. It is just a bit shorter from the bottom of the grip to the top of the slide than the .40 Sub.
Fiber optic front sight, 2 white dots at the rear.
I think I'll like it.
I'll be more careful with this one when I go ice fishing, though... It would be a shame for it to end up at the bottom of the lake with all of my other guns. Me and ice fishing just don't get along. ;)

I found this at the always astute Adrienne's blog this morning. It's from her friend and fellow blogger Redneck. Breaks it down into the simplest terms, I think.
"None of us can sit now and simply moan. We need, as individuals, to either devote much time and effort to prayer, or if not prayerfully inclined, to devote time and effort to resistance. Obama Executive Privilege Asserted Over Fast And Furious Documents
President Barack Obama has asserted executive privilege in response to requests made by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, who has embarked on a controversial investigation into the Department of Justice's Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking program.
Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole addressed Issa in a letter on Wednesday morning.
"We regret that we have arrived at this point, after the many steps we have taken to address the Committee's concerns and to accommodate the Committee's legitimate oversight interests regarding Operation Fast and Furious," he wrote. "Although we are deeply disappointed that the Committee appears intent on proceeding with a contempt vote, the Department remains willing to work with the Committee to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues."
The invocation of executive privilege allows the president to defy requests and subpoenas by members of the legislative and judicial branches for information the White House deems sensitive. Obama's decision will allow him to refuse to provide certain documents pertaining to the Fast and Furious program.

Is anyone surprised?
I, and many others, have said it many times before. Fast and Furious goes all the way to the top. obama was involved from the beginning. How could it possibly be that he wasn't? To claim otherwise would be to admit that obama doesn't have control.
They're circling the wagons.
Vote on the Contempt of Congress charges against Holder. Impeach obama. See where it goes.
I cannot for the life of me begin to understand why our elected representatives have allowed this (or any other) administration to get away with things like this. They were all over Nixon for Watergate. They were all over Clinton (a very popular President) for Monicagate and various other questionable actions. The Libs and many Conservatives were all over Bush from the time he was inaugurated until the time he left office.
What gives with obama? Are our Congresscritters afraid of him? Are they afraid of being called racists? If you know in your own mind that you're not a racist, why would you allow the potential of a little name calling to prevent you from doing your duty?
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
So much for the Congressional Oath of Office. They all swore (or affirmed) this oath. It apparently doesn't mean much to them. Their primary purpose is to protect each other in order to stay in
The approach of the Administration will now be to blame the Conservatives for picking on obama. Then it will become a race issue. That will be their rallying point. Racism. Whitey wants obama out because he's black.
We've crested the hill. We're picking up speed...
It's a distraction, anyway.

Father Who Killed Daughter's Alleged Molester Won't Face Charges In Lavaca County, Texas
SHINER, Texas — A young Texas father who beat to death with his fists a man molesting his 5-year-old daughter will not be charged, authorities said Tuesday as they released a dramatic 911 tape of the dad frantically pleading for help before the hired ranch helper died.
A Lavaca County grand jury Tuesday declined to indict the 23-year-old father in the death of Jesus Mora Flores, 47. Prosecutors said the grand jury reached same conclusion as police after reviewing the evidence: The father was authorized to use deadly force to protect his daughter.
Flores was killed June 9 on a family ranch so remote that the father is heard profanely screaming at a dispatcher who couldn't locate the property.

Suppose they gave a protest and nobody came...
From Breitbart.com. Verbatim post.
Three People Attend Jesse Jackson's Gun Store Protest, Fifty Counter-Protesters Drown Them Out
Early this month, I had a post that looked at Jesse Jackson’s June 4 speech in Racine, Wisconsin, wherein he led audience members in a chant “June 5, we vote, to revive, our democracy” and “June 16th we march, guns out, jobs in.”
The “June 5” portion of the chant was aimed at enticing people to head to the polls and vote against Republican Gov. Scott Walker in the union-led recall effort.
The “June 16th” portion of the chant was aimed at enticing people to march on gun stores and “stop the gun trail, that’s bringing the guns to kill the people.” And to fire up the audience for this protest march, Jackson referred to gun store owners as “insurgents.”
In the end the June 5 activities were futile, as Gov. Walker handily defeated the machine that tried to remove him office. And the June 16th results were even worse for Jackson, as only 3 people showed up for a planned protest of a Detroit area gun store.
That’s not a typo—only 3 people showed up. And the funniest part is that Jesse Jackson wasn’t one of them. He did all that talking, all that huffing and puffing, and then stayed home while less than a handful of his followers protested the “insurgents” who sell “the guns to kill the people.”
By the way, more than 50 people showed up as part of a counter protest in support of the gun store. Thus, Jackson’s minions were outnumbered at least 17 to 1.
I guess protests even indirectly aimed at the 2nd Amendment aren't as popular as they used to be.

Gun ownership and crime...
MILLER: Gun ownership up, crime down
FBI violent-crime rates show safer nation with more gun owners
Gun-control advocates are noticeably silent when crime rates decline. Their multimillion-dollar lobbying efforts are designed to manufacture mass anxiety that every gun owner is a potential killer. The statistics show otherwise.
Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that violent crime decreased 4 percent in 2011. The number of murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults all went down, continuing a pattern.
“This is not a one-year anomaly, but a steady decline in the FBI’s violent-crime rates,” said Andrew Arulanandam, spokesman for the National Rifle Association. “It would be disingenuous for anyone to not credit increased self-defense laws to account for this decline.”

Weird how that works, eh? When the criminals know that their potential victims are quite possibly legally armed, they tend to back off. Unless they're really, really stoopid.
Well, except in Chicago. But I'm sure that Rahm has a plan for that. :) Chicago is a battleground. And it isn't even the worst. But it is worse than Afghanistan. :) I wonder how obama feels about that? I wonder who is committing these violent crimes in Chicago? I wonder what it says about those people? Who is going to make the excuses for them? "It's hot outside". "
Lets be honest with ourselves... It isn't Whitey running around killing each other off.
And the "Anti's" still regurgitate the crap that they have been spoon fed all these years, though they're not quite as loud as they used to be. The facts of gun ownership/gun control are not on their side. Never have been. They must feel let down once they discover that their handlers have been lying to them since day one. Too bad they lack the common sense and logic to put 2 and 2 together and figure it out on their own. Legal gun owners are not criminals. Never have been. They do not add to violent crime in any significant way. Never have. Never will.
And the Brady Bunch won't comment. That's almost kinda funny.

Father Allegedly Kills Man Who Molested His Daughter, Texas Cops Say
Sheriff's deputies in Texas won't file charges against a father who they say beat an acquaintance to death after allegedly catching him sexually abusing the man's 4-year-old daughter.
During a social gathering on Saturday, the girl went inside the family's home in Shiner while other members of the family were tending to horses outside, CNN reported.
The father caught a 47-year-old man -- with whom he was casually acquainted -- attempting to molest his daughter, Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon told the Victoria Advocate. The father then allegedly punched the man in the head until he died, Harmon reported.
The father and daughter weren't named to protect the identity of the 4-year-old girl. She was described as "ok, besides the obvious mental trauma" of the incident, Harmon said.
The alleged abuser was found dead at the scene. His name wasn't released pending the announcement of his death to his family.
The sheriff's office will defer to a grand jury to decide whether charges will be brought against the father.
"You have a right to defend your daughter," he told CNN. "[The girl's father] acted in defense of his third person. Once the investigation is completed we will submit it to the district attorney who then submits it to the grand jury, who will decide if they will indict him."
The father was reportedly "very remorseful" about the death and did not know the alleged abuser would die of his injuries.

GCTF...
The US blocked Israel's participation in the Global Counterterrorism
Forum's, due to fierce objections from Turkey.
The United States blocked Israel's participation in the Global
Counterterrorism Forum's (GCTF) first meeting in Istanbul on Friday, despite
Israel's having one of the most extensive counterterrorism experiences in the
world.
Israel was excluded from the meeting due to fierce objections by Turkish
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a
Washington-based source told Globes news.
According the State Department’s website, the GCTF, which was established
in September 2011, aims at “strengthening the global counterterrorism (CT)
architecture in a manner that complements and reinforces the CT work of existing
multilateral bodies.”
Twenty-nine countries are participating in the GCTF, ten of which are Arab
and/or Muslim countries.
"The GCTF sought from the outset to bridge old and deep divides in the international community
between Western donor nations and Muslim majority nations. And it has, I think,
done that quite effectively," a top US official said at the press briefing prior
to the opening session.
Republican politicians claim that since one third of the GCTF's members are
Muslim countries, the Obama administration is trying to deepen ties with the
Muslim world at Israel's expense, Globes noted.
"Our idea with the GCTF was to bring together a limited number of
traditional donors, front line states, and emerging powers develop a more
robust, yet representative, counterterrorism capacity-building platform. A
number of our close partners with considerable experience countering and
preventing terrorism are not included among the GCTF’s founding members,” a
State Department spokesman said in response to questions about Israel's exclusion from the GCTF.
"We have discussed the GCTF and ways to involve Israel in its activities on
a number of occasions, and are committed to making this happen," he added.
Pro-Israeli sources say that the Obama administration decided to ignore the
fact that Turkey, which has a key role in the GCTF, opposes calling Hamas a
terrorist organization, even though the State Department lists it as such.
In May, Turkey blocked Israel's participation
in a NATO summit in Chicago and maintained that NATO–Israel
relations cannot be restored until Turkey-Israel relations are normalized.

Joseph Briggs, Chicago 16-Year-Old, Fatally Shot While Standing On Porch
A 16-year-old boy shot in the head while standing on the porch in front of his family's home Saturday evening died early Sunday.
Joseph Briggs, of the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street, was shot around 8 p.m. Saturday, while standing with several others on his family's porch in the city's Chicago Lawn neighborhood, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Briggs -- the only individual wounded in the incident -- was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. Police believe the shooting may have been gang-related, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
No arrests have been made in the shooting to date and an investigation is ongoing.
As of early Sunday afternoon, Briggs is one of at least five people who were fatally shot across Chicago over the weekend. At least 35 others have been wounded in separate shootings. From late Saturday into early Sunday alone, 20 people were wounded by gunfire, the Sun-Times reports.
Homicides in Chicago so far this year were up nearly 50 percent when compared to last year, as of late last month.

Kids' Gun Parties? Texas Gun Range Targets Parties For Children 8 And Older
By Marice Richter
LEWISVILLE, Texas, June 10 (Reuters) - Parents
searching for the perfect place and theme for their kids' birthday parties will
soon have another option in Texas: a gun range.
Eagle Gun Range in
Lewisville, Texas, is due to open later this summer and birthday parties will be
available to children age 8 and older. Party-goers will get a 30-minute class in
gun safety and handling and then will have the opportunity to shoot either a BB
gun or a .22 long rifle.
"I don't know whether anyone has ever tried this
before," said David Prince, who is building the indoor gun range in the Dallas
suburb. "I think it is a good way to introduce gun safety to kids in a
responsible way in a controlled environment."
Plenty of staff will be
around to help parents supervise.
"We're not just going to have kids
running around waving loaded guns and shooting at piñatas," said Prince, an
accountant and gun enthusiast.
Besides birthday parties, Prince hopes his
gun range will attract scout troops, church youth groups and other organizations
that want to introduce kids to gun safety and shooting sports.
"I think
this is such a great idea," said Lori Benoit of Austin. "I have three boys and
they are all fascinated with guns. I would love to have a place like this close
to us. It would be such a great experience to introduce shooting sports to kids
at a party."
Prince said publicity about birthday parties at the gun
range has prompted hundreds of inquiries.
Jon Baker said he is planning
to have a birthday party for his 10-year-old son as soon as the gun range
opens.
"I would much rather see kids experiment with guns in a controlled
environment than off somewhere in the open where someone could get hurt," said
