The sporadic musings of a middle aged man who isn't exactly happy with the direction America is taking today....

Well...
Made it through Christmas.
I spent Christmas Eve at my oldest son and his family's house while they went to my daughter in law's father's house. It was good. They came home about 10 pm and we talked for a couple of hours then went to bed.
Spent Christmas Day with them and my middle son. Big breakfast, presents, family time then lasagna for dinner. It was good.
My only regret is that I didn't go to church on Christmas Eve. Didn't want to go alone this year. In hindsight I know it would have been fine. The members of our church have been very supportive.
Ahhh well...
For everyone dealing with sadness, I pray for you to have the strength to persevere.
I hope everyone had as good a Christmas as possible.
Peace.

Merry Christmas...
As you can imagine, this Christmas is a bit different than the Christmas I'm used to. I miss my Judy. Words cannot describe that feeling, but I know that someday we will be together again.
I wish each and every one of you all the best at this most joyous time of the year. God bless...
Peace.

Some of you know, some of you don't...
My world was turned upside down and inside out on the 12th of April when my wife of 44 years passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. She was barely 18, I was barely 19, when we married.
She was diagnosed with a UTI on Sunday the 9th at our local Urgent Care clinic. On Tuesday the 11th she asked me to take her to the ER. Mistakes were made, but she was sick. She shouldn't be gone, but she is. She passed at 1350 on the 12th of April. I was with her every moment. I have gone from being incredibly angry at the ER doc and his staff, to being incredibly sad. The ER was a shit show from the time we arrived until they pushed her unconscious body to the ICU 3 hours later. Perhaps someday I will share the story...
We should have had at least 20 more years together.
She was my best friend, my everything. I love her more than life.
Anyway, for those who have asked where I am at, I am gone. For now, anyway. My fire is merely a few embers right now.

Suicide pact...
Liberal ideology conceives of “safe spaces” in the context of alleged
white patriarchy, but there was a real need for a “safe space” in
Britain’s Manchester Arena on May 22, when 22-year-old terrorist Salman
Abedi detonated his nail- and screw-filled suicide bomb after a concert
by teen idol Ariana Grande. What was the “progressive” answer to yet
another instance of Islamic terrorism in the West? Feckless calls for
resisting hate, pledges of renewed diversity, and little else.
A rethinking of immigration policies is off the table. Nothing that an Islamic terrorist can do will ever shake the left-wing commitment to open borders—not mass sexual assaults, not the deliberate slaughter of gays, and not, as in Manchester last week, the killing of young girls. The real threat that radical Islam poses to feminism and gay rights must be disregarded in order to transform the West by Third World immigration. Defenders of the open-borders status quo inevitably claim that if a terrorist is a second-generation immigrant, like Abedi, immigration policy has nothing to do with his attack. (Abedi’s parents emigrated to Britain from Libya; his immediate family in Manchester lived in the world’s largest Libyan enclave outside Africa itself.) Media Matters ridiculed a comment about the Manchester bombing by Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt with the following headline: fox news host suggests ‘open borders’ are to blame for manchester attack carried out by british native.
Earhardt had asked how to prevent “what’s happening in Europe, with all these open borders, they’re not vetting, they’re opening their borders to families like this, and this is how they’re paid back in return.” Pace Media Matters, a second-generation Muslim immigrant with a zeal for suicide bombing is as much of an immigration issue as a first-generation immigrant with a terrorist bent. The fact that second-generation immigrants are not assimilating into Western culture makes immigration policy more, not less, of a pressing matter. It is absurd to suggest that Abedi picked up his terrorist leanings from reading William Shakespeare and William Wordsworth, rather than from the ideology of radical Islam that has been imported into Britain by mass immigration.

Who will protect us from those who protect us...?
This is a big deal... (From: Reason.com)
"In 2002 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit said that the lawful use of deadly force by the police may be ruled unlawful if the police themselves "created the need to use force" by acting in an illegal manner. "Where an officer intentionally or recklessly provokes a violent confrontation, if the provocation is an independent Fourth Amendment violation," the 9th Circuit held in Billington v. Smith, the officer "may be held liable for his otherwise defensive use of deadly force." Otherwise known as the "provocation doctrine," this legal standard has served as an important check on overreaching law enforcement tactics. Today, by a vote of 8-0, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the 9th Circuit's reasoning and wiped the provocation doctrine off the books.
At issue today in County of Los Angeles v. Mendez was a 2010 incident in which two deputies from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department entered the residence of Angel Mendez and Jennifer Garcia without a search warrant, spotted Mendez holding a BB gun (which he kept on hand to fend off rats), and shot both Mendez and Garcia multiple times in ostensible self-defense. Mendez's right leg was later amputated below the knee as a result of his injuries. Garcia was shot in the back.
Mendez and Garcia sued, charging the police with illegal search, illegal seizure, and illegal use of force under the Fourth Amendment. In March 2016, Mendez and Garcia prevailed at the 9th Circuit, which rejected the officers' pleas for qualified immunity and instead held that the two detectives were "liable for the shooting as a foreseeable consequence of their unconstitutional entry even though the shooting itself was not unconstitutionally excessive force under the Fourth Amendment." In other words, Mendez and Garcia prevailed under the provocation doctrine."

Defeating Radical Islam...
"To defeat radical Islam, we are going to also have to defeat liberalism."
In the linked news article we see that Liberals worry that the killing of 22 and injuring of over 50 concert goers by a radical Muslim man will lead to more Islamophobia.
Remember the Crusades? They were a response to 400 years of radical Islam. I wonder if it will take so long this time to say "enough is enough"?
Yes, I realize that not all Muslims are actively trying to kill off Infidels.
I suspect that there are some peaceful Muslims out there in the world. Perhaps a lot of them.
But then again, perhaps all Muslims have the same goal and are willing to let the radical arm of Islam do all the dirty work to rid the world of Infidels?
Perhaps we are all wrong-minded Islamophobes and Islam really is a religion of peace and tolerance?
But...
No words. No answers.

Standing at the bar...
Shared with me by my old boss...
I was standing at the bar of Terminal 3 in the International Airport when this small Chinese guy comes in, stands next to me, and starts drinking a beer.
I asked him, "Do you know any of those martial arts things, like Kung-Fu, Karate, or Ju-Jitsu?"
He says "No, I don't. And furthermore, why the hell would you ask me that? Is it because I'm Chinese?
"No," I said, "It's because you're drinking my beer, you little prick"

Funeral for a friend...
She was 83 years old.
She was a friend of the family. A friend of my parents. She knew my kids...
I met her when I was 6 or 7. She knew all 5 of my brothers and sisters. All younger. ;)
She had 7 kids of her own. 23 grand kids, 22 greats and a great on the way.
I took her daughter's graduation photos, then her wedding photos. I took her youngest daughter's graduation photos. She came to my Confirmation. And my wedding. And the funerals of my parents.
She use to call me from the other side of town. Their water heater wasn't working. Or the stove. Or the furnace. She had 5 sons. I am the same age as her oldest. We grew up together. She didn't call them. She called me. I will admit that she pissed me off a couple of times because there was nothing wrong. She just wanted to talk. Her and Harvey. Her husband since 1951. He has been gone for a bit over two years. Scout leader. Wore his soul and his beliefs on his sleeve. I would get in the car and drive across town. I'd take tools. I'd tinker and then drink coffee and talk. They would ask about my parents, who were in Arizona at the time. Both gone now.
I learned to play checkers in her living room on Avalon. She use to bake oatmeal raisin cookies. We would eat them while they were still warm. She had a crazy laugh. She always had people over.
Her kids didn't treat her well. They were all there today. A lot of family members. Kids. Grands. Greats.
And 7 friends. It made me sad. My wife was working today so I went alone. I talked to everyone. My middle son was on the road. Driving. Hauling a combine to Moorhead. They liked him. He was special to them. I wish he could have been here.
Her and Harvey would sometimes go for a drive and they would end up here, at my house. We would drink coffee and talk. Harvey couldn't drive by then. Shirley shouldn't have. ;) But they got around. Together.
I sang in church today. I go to church regularly. I believe. I rarely sing in church. I leave that to my wife. But today... Today I was alone, so I sang. How Great Thou Art... Not likely going to happen again, anytime soon. It felt right today.
83 years old. Family.
7 friends.
A service that lasted less than an hour, then a committal service at the graveside. 10 minutes.
83 years and that is what it comes to. Family. A few friends. An hour.
I talked to my son a while ago. He is in his sleeper in Grand Meadow. I know he is thinking about Shirley tonight.
Sad that it comes to this. I don't know what would be better...

A Civil War...
https://www.israelrising.com/the-civil-war-is-here/
I had never read Daniel Greenfield before. I saw this posted on Patrick Kelly's Fb page and had to do some research. Sharp fella, this Daniel Greenfield. His post below, a link above... Worth reading, IMO.
This civil war is very different than the last one. There are no cannons or cavalry charges. The left doesn’t want to secede. It wants to rule. Political conflicts become civil wars when one side refuses to accept the existing authority. The left has rejected all forms of authority that it doesn’t control.
The left has rejected the outcome of the last two presidential elections won by Republicans. It has rejected the judicial authority of the Supreme Court when it decisions don’t accord with its agenda. It rejects the legislative authority of Congress when it is not dominated by the left.
It rejected the Constitution so long ago that it hardly bears mentioning.
It was for total unilateral executive authority under Obama. And now it’s for states unilaterally deciding what laws they will follow. (As long as that involves defying immigration laws under Trump, not following them under Obama.) It was for the sacrosanct authority of the Senate when it held the majority. Then it decried the Senate as an outmoded institution when the Republicans took it over.
It was for Obama defying the orders of Federal judges, no matter how well grounded in existing law, and it is for Federal judges overriding any order by Trump on any grounds whatsoever. It was for Obama penalizing whistleblowers, but now undermining the government from within has become “patriotic”.
There is no form of legal authority that the left accepts as a permanent institution. It only utilizes forms of authority selectively when it controls them. But when government officials refuse the orders of the duly elected government because their allegiance is to an ideology whose agenda is in conflict with the President and Congress, that’s not activism, protest, politics or civil disobedience; it’s treason.
After losing Congress, the left consolidated its authority in the White House. After losing the White House, the left shifted its center of authority to Federal judges and unelected government officials. Each defeat led the radicalized Democrats to relocate from more democratic to less democratic institutions.
This isn’t just hypocrisy. That’s a common political sin. Hypocrites maneuver within the system. The left has no allegiance to the system. It accepts no laws other than those dictated by its ideology.
Democrats have become radicalized by the left. This doesn’t just mean that they pursue all sorts of bad policies. It means that their first and foremost allegiance is to an ideology, not the Constitution, not our country or our system of government. All of those are only to be used as vehicles for their ideology.
That’s why compromise has become impossible.
Our system of government was designed to allow different groups to negotiate their differences. But those differences were supposed to be based around finding shared interests. The most profound of these shared interests was that of a common country based around certain civilizational values. The left has replaced these Founding ideas with radically different notions and principles. It has rejected the primary importance of the country. As a result it shares little in the way of interests or values.
Instead it has retreated to cultural urban and suburban enclaves where it has centralized tremendous amounts of power while disregarding the interests and values of most of the country. If it considers them at all, it is convinced that they will shortly disappear to be replaced by compliant immigrants and college indoctrinated leftists who will form a permanent demographic majority for its agenda.
But it couldn’t wait that long because it is animated by the conviction that enforcing its ideas is urgent and inevitable. And so it turned what had been a hidden transition into an open break.
In the hidden transition, its authority figures had hijacked the law and every political office they held to pursue their ideological agenda. The left had used its vast cultural power to manufacture a consensus that was slowly transitioning the country from American values to its values and agendas. The right had proven largely impotent in the face of a program which corrupted and subverted from within.
The left was enormously successful in this regard. It was so successful that it lost all sense of proportion and decided to be open about its views and to launch a political power struggle after losing an election.
The Democrats were no longer being slowly injected with leftist ideology. Instead the left openly took over and demanded allegiance to open borders, identity politics and environmental fanaticism. The exodus of voters wiped out the Democrats across much of what the left deemed flyover country.
The left responded to democratic defeats by retreating deeper into undemocratic institutions, whether it was the bureaucracy or the corporate media, while doubling down on its political radicalism. It is now openly defying the outcome of a national election using a coalition of bureaucrats, corporations, unelected officials, celebrities and reporters that are based out of its cultural and political enclaves.
It has responded to a lost election by constructing sanctuary cities and states thereby turning a cultural and ideological secession into a legal secession. But while secessionists want to be left alone authoritarians want everyone to follow their laws. The left is an authoritarian movement that wants total compliance with its dictates with severe punishments for those who disobey.
The left describes its actions as principled. But more accurately they are ideological. Officials at various levels of government have rejected the authority of the President of the United States, of Congress and of the Constitution because those are at odds with their radical ideology. Judges have cloaked this rejection in law. Mayors and governors are not even pretending that their actions are lawful.
The choices of this civil war are painfully clear.
We can have a system of government based around the Constitution with democratically elected representatives. Or we can have one based on the ideological principles of the left in which all laws and processes, including elections and the Constitution, are fig leaves for enforcing social justice.
But we cannot have both.
Some civil wars happen when a political conflict can’t be resolved at the political level. The really bad ones happen when an irresolvable political conflict combines with an irresolvable cultural conflict.
That is what we have now.
The left has made it clear that it will not accept the lawful authority of our system of government. It will not accept the outcome of elections. It will not accept these things because they are at odds with its ideology and because they represent the will of large portions of the country whom they despise.
The question is what comes next.
The last time around growing tensions began to explode in violent confrontations between extremists on both sides. These extremists were lauded by moderates who mainstreamed their views. The first Republican president was elected and rejected. The political tensions led to conflict and then civil war.
The left doesn’t believe in secession. It’s an authoritarian political movement that has lost democratic authority. There is now a political power struggle underway between the democratically elected officials and the undemocratic machinery of government aided by a handful of judges and local elected officials.
What this really means is that there are two competing governments; the legal government and a treasonous anti-government of the left. If this political conflict progresses, agencies and individuals at every level of government will be asked to demonstrate their allegiance to these two competing governments. And that can swiftly and explosively transform into an actual civil war.
There is no sign that the left understands or is troubled by the implications of the conflict it has initiated. And there are few signs that Democrats properly understand the dangerous road that the radical left is drawing them toward. The left assumes that the winners of a democratic election will back down rather than stand on their authority. It is unprepared for the possibility that democracy won’t die in darkness.
Civil wars end when one side is forced to accept the authority of the other. The left expects everyone to accept its ideological authority. Conservatives expect the left to accept Constitutional authority. The conflict is still political and cultural. It’s being fought in the media and within the government. But if neither side backs down, then it will go beyond words as both sides give contradictory orders.
The left is a treasonous movement. The Democrats became a treasonous organization when they fell under the sway of a movement that rejects our system of government, its laws and its elections. Now their treason is coming to a head. They are engaged in a struggle for power against the government. That’s not protest. It’s not activism. The old treason of the sixties has come of age. A civil war has begun.
This is a primal conflict between a totalitarian system and a democratic system. Its outcome will determine whether we will be a free nation or a nation of slaves.

As usual, I am probably a bit late to the dance. Anyway, if you like what you see, there is more food for thought here:

Violets are Blue...

Even as a child the statement "violets are blue" made no sense to me. They are, well, violet. A shad of purple. ;)

Inflation...
I use to buy Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill for 33 cents a bottle at the Class VI Store. Just under $4 a case. I would buy Annie Green Springs Peach Creek for 34 cents a bottle. Just over $4 a case. This stuff is now 3 bucks a bottle after a 50 cent price decline. Glad I don't drink much wine anymore... ;)
Traveling...
I have been gone from the old blog for awhile. A couple of you folks noticed. Warms my heart...
The Missus and I traveled to Arizona for a few days to visit our youngest son and his girlfriend. The Missus and I have been traveling companions on this journey through life for nearly 44 years, and this trip was another good one.
Anyway, I'm really not sure why anyone stops by here to partake of my bad attitude, but I do appreciate knowing that there are other travelers with similar designs making the journey together... We may be loners, but we are never really alone. Good to know.
Be well, stay safe...

And then there was Fauxahontas... She persisted in being stoopid and was censured. Just as she was told she would be. She wasn't heroic. Any of us would have whooped our kids' ass for acting like she did.

A necessary evil? A government with an insatiable desire to take and spend your money? When is enough, enough?
